These pieces begin with a discarded material, a material that displays evidence of the human hand through use, age or environment. Subsequent materials are then added in rows, supported by the grid and relating to one another through pattern, color, texture or another characteristic that further spins the tale. At the same time, craft traditions are fused with drawing and painting through the use of quilting, stitch, encaustic and line. I think of these sewn pieces and the marks on the building facades that inspired them as maps, leading the way, telling a story and giving us a sense of place.
