**NOTE** It is highly recommended, but not necessary, to have enrolled in and completed the Spring, 2024 Mark-Making as Practice Class. If you have not completed the class, an equivalent mark-making practice and/or course is recommended.

Designed as a complementary course to Mixed Media Practice, this program bridges the gap between developing artistic skills and translating them into meaningful studio work. With a focus on fostering confidence, intuition, and artistic growth, participants will engage in a series of structured exercises, reading, writing, group discussion and personal mentorship aimed at deepening their creative process and enriching their studio practice.

Many of you have mentored with me and are familiar with the Studio Practice Pyramid. It goes something like this…Picture a pyramid-at the bottom of the pyramid are foundation blocks on which the pyramid is built. As the pyramid progresses from the foundation to the top, the blocks merge together to form the pinnacle-your goal of a cohesive body of work. The Studio Practice Pyramid consists of a total of 6 foundational blocks and when these blocks are implemented into your practice, they begin to merge into your practice, work and mind so that they are no longer seen as separate entities, they are a part of you and your creative life. Your content vision becomes clear, your creative process becomes second-nature and you will build the body of work you always knew you could create. This course focuses on the 6 primary foundation blocks to build content into your studio work.

Block 1: Drawing Participants will continue their mark-making practice through comprehensive exercises more focused on their own personal content.

Block 2: Reading Reading is essential for nurturing artistic inspiration and intellectual curiosity. Participants will commit to short, daily reading sessions, exploring texts relevant to their own artistic interests.

Block 3: Writing Writing serves as a tool for reflection and self-expression. Participants will maintain a studio log to document their creative process, noting insights, challenges, and accomplishments as well as a short summary of daily readings. Additionally, participants may opt to keep a story journal to capture subconscious thoughts and personal narratives that may inform their practice.

Block 4: Studio Practice In the studio, participants put theory into action, dedicating time to creative experimentation and focused work. Guided by a structured studio schedule, participants will engage in both familiar and new artistic techniques, balancing the production of established work with the exploration of fresh ideas.

Block 5: Discussion Regular self-critique and peer discussion fosters critical thinking, accountability and artistic growth. There is a certain confidence level that is developed by speaking out loud about yours and other artist’s work within a small group.

Block 6: Time Patience and perseverance are essential virtues in artistic development. Participants will learn to embrace the process of growth, allowing time for experimentation, reflection, and refinement. Through regular accountability meetings, participants will stay on track with their goals and navigate challenges with support and encouragement.

By the end of the course, participants have developed a deeper understanding of their artistic practice and its integration into their daily lives. Through structured exercises and mindful reflection, participants will gain confidence in their creative abilities and lay the groundwork for continued artistic growth and exploration.

  • • You have a solo show coming up and your body of work is all over the place.

    • You have no idea what your work is about.

    • You successfully completed the Mark-Making as Practice class and would like to keep the momentum going.

    • You would like to bridge the gap between your mark-making practice and your studio practice.

    • Your studio practice is more ‘fits and starts’ than smooth and consistent.

    • You would like to delve deeper into your work both emotionally and artistically.

    • You would like to feel more confident when speaking about your work.

    • You would love to have an artist accountability partner but don’t know anyone or haven’t found anyone suitable.

    • You would like to learn helpful tips to keep your studio momentum and content development going.

    • You never went to art school and would like to learn more about historical and contemporary artists so as to put your own art and ideas into context.

    • You freeze when someone asks what your work is about.

    • You freeze when asked to write an artist’s statement.

    • You would like to develop a cohesive body of work, but don’t know where or how to begin.

    • You would like to develop your own unique artistic voice.

  • The meetings begin with a lesson consisting of a writing exercise, slide lecture and/or documentary.

The second half of the meeting is devoted to focused group discussion/critique on studio work, assigned writing, assigned reading, assigned video.

No worries if you can’t be present for the actual meetings. There is a private class Facebook Group to post work and communicate with fellow classmates. It is highly recommended if you aren’t able to attend the weekly meetings in person, you communicate and post frequently on the Facebook Page. You will get the most out of this course by participating as often as you can.

The real learning for this course happens after the weekly class has ended. There are weekly assignments of 2-5 hours outside of class that should be completed to get the most out of the course.

  • There is a lot of writing required for this class and you may want to purchase a journal devoted to this class only.

As far as art supplies, you need nothing more than mark-making and studio tools that you normally work with.

  • Although its way more fun to attend the live classes, I understand that some people won't be able to make it to every class.

The recordings will be available for 5 months following the last class.
