Encaustic Echos:
Exploring Layers, Translucency and Embellishment

A COMPREHENSIVE LAYERS COURSE

In time,
as an artist’s gestures become more assured,
the chosen tools become an extension of the artists own spirit.

In time,
exploration gives way to expression.

— David Bayles, Art & Fear

This immersive workshop invites artists to dive deep into the creation of intricate patterns, expressive personal surfaces, and complex, multi-layered works using the extraordinary medium of encaustic combined with conventional and non-conventional processes and media. With a strong emphasis on mixed media, we will explore mark-making as both an intuitive and deliberate act — a way to discover new forms, materials, and ideas.

Participants will begin by developing rich “starter layers” using watercolor, inks, and experimental techniques with fire, soot, and smoke. Then incorporating unconventional materials such as rust-printed fabrics, compost-stained textiles, soy wax, and hand-stitched surfaces, turning each into a unique foundation for further exploration.

From there, artists will build layers of translucent, semi-translucent, and opaque encaustic, responding to the emerging marks and forms as they work. Our embellishment layers of patterned collage, photo transfers, stencils, candy molds, gold leaf, and transfer foils create surfaces that sparkle with depth and complexity.

Throughout the workshop, a series of thought-provoking exercises will encourage process-driven experimentation and guide participants toward giving visual form to the intangible — thoughts, ideas, emotions, and memories. Together, we’ll explore how pattern and repetition can be used not just as decoration, but as content that strengthens narrative and meaning.

This workshop is designed to push you beyond your comfort zone. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of mark-making, a more intuitive approach to combining media, and a renewed ability to create work that is layered, thoughtful, and uniquely your own.

  • Whenever I teach a Virtual Course I always warn participants not to run out and purchase a bunch of supplies. Watch the demonstrations to see if first, the technique interests you. Second, check to see if you might already have a supply on hand that may work as a good substitute before purchasing anything new.

I have included a supplies PDF on this page that is available for download. It includes three tiers of supplies for your convenience-a Basics List, A Delving In List and a more Comprehensive Supplies and Resources List. This PDF will also be emailed to you a few weeks before the first class.

  • Although its way more fun to attend the live classes, I understand that most people won't be able to make it to every class.

The recordings will be available for the duration of the 6 weeks plus 3 months following the last class.

“I loved the course on so many levels.  I thought the timing, the spacing of different modules, the quotes, the books, the drawings, all worked out so beautifully. I couldn't wait to get up and get working each morning and was always surprised when the day was done. Your generosity and teaching style were inspiring and I can't wait to work on a new set of skills.”

“Thank you so much for the wonderful experience of learning encaustics with you. What an incredible teacher you are – not only giving us the technical information, but the creative steps to gain confidence to use them.”

“Lorraine is by far one of the best instructors in encaustic I have ever had. That is one of the reasons that the virtual class with her worked so well – she is an educator and understands how to teach, besides being an incredible encaustic artist. ”

Lisa

“Thank you so much for this wonderful workshop. I received so many ideas and ‘food’ for my creative adventures - it will last quite some time to work on that. You went above encaustic instructions and shared many other ways to feed our creative thirst :) I feel very inspired.”
